Originally based largely in folk, the genre encompassed everything from confessional love songs to politically charged rebellion. These artists were often active in protests and used their status to draw attention to issues of the day. But to quote Bob Dylan, "the times they are a changin'." Today's mellow guitar based acoustic music stirs up images of relaxing in a coffeehouse in an intimate setting with your favorite brew, or an open mic night at a dimly lit cafe.

Appreciation for the genre was greatly enhanced when MTV debuted its Unplugged series. Acoustic became cool and artists jumped on the unplugged bandwagon. And many single releases included a special acoustic version or mix. Today's mainstream pop artists also routinely offer acoustic versions of hit songs. Many radio stations host special engagements and present artists in their studios very often performing acoustic sets.
