As country music grew in popularity in the mid twentieth century, it gave birth to some of music's greatest legends. Country music was the voice of the working class. Until the 1980's, the genre was generally referred to as Country & Western. Folk and rockabilly elements were prominent. Country lyrics were dominated by heartache and sorrow and were confessional and often told a story. Nashville and the Grand Ole Opry became the nucleus of the genre. In the sixties, the format took a turn away from the traditional western and cowboy ballad sound and became more mainstream and the sound was dubbed countrypolitan. In the seventies, country continued to change, gaining more crossover appeal.

Cowgirls are more stylish and cowboys are more often seen in baseball caps than cowboy hats. Today's country themes are heavy on trucks, rides, beer, parties and fun and less about heartbreak and outlaws.
