When hip hop culture emerged in the late seventies, It didn't take long for the genre to work its way to the airwaves. It was new and exciting and inspired generations of musical artists. Hip Hop initially drew from many musical styles including R&B, disco, and funk, and later relied heavily on rap. Break dancing and scratching are elements of the culture.

In the 80's, hip hop music exploded and DJs and MCs were producing what would turn out to be influential classics. Hip Hop has always been regional (east coast, west coast), but certainly has no racial boundaries. Although hip hop seemed to peak in the nineties and 00's, it still remains very popular and has a consistent presence on mainstream music charts.
